Scotland Europa- Research & Development Framework Programme

Framework Programme 7

The 7th framework programme for research and development (FP7) is the main EU funding instrument to promote Research and Technological Development across Europe.

With a budget of over €53bn, the seven-year Programme (2007-2013) represents a significant opportunity for Scottish organisations to develop innovative, leading-edge technologies and to be part of ground breaking EU-wide research projects.

Our Service

In a joint initiative with Enterprise Europe Scotland, Scotland Europa has developed an integrated service to support collaborative research and development in Scotland.

The aim of our service is to provide Scottish organisations with advice and assistance on how to access the most appropriate research and development funding support from the European Union.

Who is FP7 for?

The Framework Programme funds any “legal entity” including:

  • Companies (both large ones and SMEs);
  • Higher education institutions;
  • Research organisations;
  • Individuals with research capability; and
  • Public sector organisations.

What do you need to know?

FP7 is the umbrella for four main Programmes:

  • Cooperation - is the larger FP7 Programme which funds transnational and international consortia of industry & academia in order to carry out collaborative research projects Capacities - strengthens the research capacities across Europe targeting specific beneficiaries;
  • Ideas - funds ‘frontier research’ which is implemented by the new European Research Council (ERC); and
  • People – supports research mobility and career development for European researchers.

FP7 works by initiating specific annual calls for proposals under each different theme.

Projects can be based on a number of different funding models, though collaborative projects are the most common. A project consortium must include a minimum of three independent organisations from three different Member States and/or Associated Countries.
