Scotland Europa - Environment
Environment
Scotland Europa is at the core of European politics, providing a focal point for Scottish interests in the heart of the EU. This allows us to influence policy, discussion and debate. These discussions with the EU institutions, regional offices and other stakeholders ensure that Scotland maintains a strong position in Europe.
Scotland has an extremely rich and well protected environment. A healthy environment is crucial to ensure Scotland has a robust economy and society. Currently more than 80% of all environmental legislation transposed by the Scottish Parliament originates in Brussels.
Our focus on environment at Scotland Europa is changing with the integration and mainstreaming of environmental measures in wider EU Policy objectives. Similarly, in Scotland our environment is seen as a major asset in helping deliver sustainable economic growth.
With this in mind, we will be working with our members to develop a more cross-cutting approach to environmental policy: Environment & Health, Environment & Transport and Environment & Enterprise issues such as eco-innovation.
The following aspects of EU Environment Policy will also be our focus in the year ahead:
- Progression of the Commission's Sustainable Consumption & Production and Sustainable Industrial Policy Action Plan;
- The development of the 6th Environment Action Programme and the thematic strategies of air, waste, water, soil, pesticides, natural resources and urban environment;
- Nature and Biodiversity;
- Chemical policy; and
- Funding issues.
