Scotland Europa - European Union Integrated Lifelong Learning Programme

Education and Lifelong Learning Policy

In the European Union (EU) education is the responsibility of Member States. Nevertheless, the Community, through DG Education, “shall contribute to the development of quality education by encouraging cooperation between Member States….through actions such as promoting the mobility of citizens, designing joint study programmes, establishing networks, exchanging information or set common credits awarding systems”.

Scotland Europa is deeply engaged in supporting academia, research institutes and colleges in sharing European examples of good education policy practice, to help the understanding of the EU benchmarks set by the Commission to achieve the Lisbon objectives in the education sector, to ensure Scotland responds coherently to global education challenges, whilst retaining its individual sovereignty in the field of Education policy.

Particular focus is attributed to the Scotland participation to the Bologna Process, whose purpose is to create a European higher education area by harmonising academic degree structures and standards as well as academic quality assurance standards throughout EU Member States and in other European countries, and to the active engagement in translational (EU) and international (Extra-EU) funded education programmes, managed by the Education, Audiovisual & Culture Executive Agency (EACEA).
